There is something about a fresh manicure that makes me feel instantly put together. But between work, life and everything in between, a weekly salon appointment isn't always realistic. Enter press-on nails: the beauty shortcut I was skeptical about until I tried a really good set. Now I keep a few favorites on hand and do my nails at the kitchen counter with a cozy fire video playing.

Three cases of press-on nails: a milky nude set, a nude set with burgundy French tips and a deep plum set, styled on cream linen.

Why I Switched to Press-Ons

Today's press-on nails are a far cry from the plasticky versions we wore as kids. The best sets are thin, glossy, flexible and shaped like a real salon manicure. With good prep, my press-ons last up to 30 days. They cost a fraction of a gel appointment and come off without damaging my natural nails.

My Favorite Sets Right Now

1. My Current Favorite: Glamnetic Merlot

A matte burgundy French tip in a short almond shape. It's rich and moody without being too dark, and it looks expensive with a cream sweater and gold jewelry. The full kit comes with everything you need, and it wears for up to two weeks.

2. My Everyday Milky Nude: BTArtbox Vanilla Cream

A soft, sheer milky ombre that goes with absolutely everything. It's my go-to for workdays and travel. You get 32 nails in 16 sizes, so finding your fit is easy.

My Press-On Prep Routine

Prep is the secret to a set that lasts. With good prep, my press-ons last up to 30 days. This is exactly what I use every time:

Step 1: Soften cuticles. A swipe of Sally Hansen Instant Cuticle Remover softens excess cuticle in about 15 seconds.

Step 2: Push back and tidy. I gently push cuticles back and snip any hangnails with my cuticle nipper and pusher set.

Step 3: Prep, size and glue. Lightly buff the nail surface, then wipe each fingernail with the alcohol prep pad that comes with your nail kit. Select the right size press-on for each nail (it should fit edge to edge). Next, take a Q-tip dipped in 100% acetone and swipe it over the backs of the press-ons, or scuff up the back surface with a file. This helps the glue adhere better. Apply with Beauty Secrets drip-proof nail glue (it comes bundled with the cushion file I use to shape), hold each nail for 20 to 30 seconds, and avoid hot water for the first hour.

Step 4: Nourish nightly. A little Sally Hansen Vitamin E Cuticle Oil each night keeps everything looking fresh.

Step 5: Remove gently. When it's time for a new set, Glamnetic Press-On Remover Serum lets them slide off in minutes without damaging my natural nails.

The Verdict

If you love the look of a fresh manicure but not the time or the price, a great set of press-ons is a game changer. Grab a set, put on something cozy, and give yourself a salon night at home.
